On the second of June:
We went to Johor Baharu, together with the class, we went there for a day trip.Though we only spent a day there, we gain many valuable experiences. We went to the Layang Layang Museum, Sultan Abu Bakar Royal Museum and Oil Palm Plantation.
Through this trip I understood Johor culture and history better.I realized that things can't be taken for granted. Our ancestors went through lots of hardship to provide us with what we have now, hence we should all be cherishing them.In the following posts, we will share with you our reflection on the places that we have visited.
We gazed upon the lifestyle of the rich and famous, and learn about the royal legacies and history of the Johor Sultan. Luxury presents itself here in the form of 19th-century currencies and gold coins, the first Johor postal stamps, antique furniture, silver-plated ceramics and Chinese pottery. Royal ceremonies and functions held in the magnificent chambers reflect the royal family's rich lifestyle. Stately furnishings fill the reception room, banqueting hall and throne room, while a life-sized tiger and rhinoceros reside within the trophy room. This museum is generally advertized as Johor Bahru’s most major sightseeing attraction and is worthy of its reputation, offering some splendid features and decorations. The palace serves mainly as a museum and is occasionally used for important state functions. Additions and renovations over the years have ensured that the palace has maintained its majestic appearance. Visitors are required to remove their shoes before entering.
The building look simple with some formal Islamic style but it give us a sense of clean , peace and most importantly , a sense of surprise when you are inside the building. There is quite a lot things too see and explore in this Johor royal museum , but it could be quite boring if you got totally no knowledge about simple Johor history in the "precolonise" era. I think it is probably the best place to visit at around Johor.
REFLECTION:
I have learnt that the oil palm has bright male and female flowers. Before taking on a bright reddish orange color from the tropical sun when they mature, the fruit is dark purple, almost black. Inside, they have one single seed and the kernel is protected by the stone, a surrounded by a fleshy pulp. Both the kernel and the pulp provide abundant oil. Palm oil and palm kernel oil are used to manufacture products for making soaps, detergents, lubricants for paint, varnishes, gums and ink.
It also can be used as biofuel. Biodiesel is now a new alternative for the use of palm oil as a raw material for other products.
RESEARCH:
OIL PALM originatd from Africa and was introduced by William Sime and Henry Dardy in 1910
Four stages of processing can be distinguished ;
sterilization, bunch stripping, oil extraction and oil clarification and purification.
streilization: by steaming
bunch stripping: separate fruits from the bunch
oil extraction: placed under pressure
oil clarification: purified
The empty fruit bunch can be reused for power, fertilizers can be used for two distinctive oil:
>oiein
>stearin
90% of cooking oil come from the palm.
How to know if it is ripe?
When ripe 5 seeds will drop when the leaf iscut, every tree can be harvested thrice monthly
6 month after pollination, the tree would be able tobear fruits
fruit:
pulp: the yellow part of the seed a common cooking ingredient
kernel: the white area, make into cosmetics
In general, 20% of the fruit is oil.
